St Georges church is a lively and busy Anglican church in the 'High Church' tradition. Set as a beacon overlooking the sea, the C19 french gothic style Pearson building occupies a commanding position above the beach.
The church boasts a justly famous 2-manual TC Lewis organ, virtually unchanged from its original specification. The church has a strong musical tradition with a mixed choir, which has been praised as "one of the best parish church choirs in the country", tackling a varied and challenging repertoire from all periods from Perotin and Josquin to Matthias and Taverner.

The parish has a central website under construction at St Georges Website - check to see progress.

Welcome to St George's church
St George's extends a warm welcome to all visitors and new residents in the area. All are welcome to daily services in the church and especially to the main Sunday services. Communicant members of all Christian Churches are welcome to receive Holy Communion.

If you are new to the Parish, please ask one of the Sidespersons for an address card or send an email to us, so that we may contact you. If you are visiting Cullercoats, we hope you will enjoy your time with us. Please make yourself known, either to the Clergy or to a Church Warden.

Historical notes

"Built by the 6th Duke of Northumberland in 1884. Architect J.L. Pearson.
Perfectly proportioned Gothic building, stone vaulted and finished with great attention to detail.
Tower and spire 180 feet high. Building matched to its splendid, but exposed, coastal site. It architectural perfection is statement of what it stands for - the glory of God - and the worship of the faithful. The furnishings and the hand-made kneelers are all part of the offering of praise to God by His people."

[The Newcastle Diocesan Gazetteer (1982), page 82]

Cullercoats was still a small fishing village in 1878 when John Loughborough Pearson was commissioned by the sixth Duke of Northumberland to build a church in memory of his father; and the coastal resort of Tynemouth was expanding to cater for the increase in public demand for gracious living. St George's church was to be the focal point of that development.

Built in local sandstone, and consecrated in 1884, Pearson's design is a unique interpretation of 13th century French Gothic architecture. The massing is confident, emphasised by the striking tower with its soaring broach spire, and the stone vaulted interior has a grandeur, which only Pearson could achieve. There is an obvious family resemblance to Pearson's contemporary Cathedral at Truro.

Stained glass by Kempe and Tower in the apse and side aisles is complemented by Leonard Evetts' baptistry windows, and the furnishings throughout are of oak.

The 1885 T C Lewis organ (see organ info)is recognised throughout the world as one of the finest musical instruments of the period.

The church until very recently had a strong music tradition, though as with many such parish churches, this has lapsed.
